Having now run here several times, Loyd is steadfast in his description of Grandma's Marathon as one of the best in the world. Loyd touches on all of his running experiences in this episode, including the first time he ran in Duluth at the 2019 Grandma's Marathon after a long, personal battle with depression. Well, Tony lied to himself and as since on running and on marathoning - he qualified for his first Boston Marathon in 2005 and has run several other big races, including the 2013 New York City Marathon. So get ready to once again tie up your laces for another year of memories, miles, and human might.Tony Loyd began running late in life and, to himself, said he'd never do it again after running his first-ever marathon in 2001. Since our inaugural race in 1977, Grandma’s Marathon has grown into something much bigger than just a 26.2-mile race along the scenic North Shore of Minnesota. The opening salvo to race day, the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon is now arguably the most popular event on Grandma’s Marathon weekend. This 3.1-mile race on Friday evening starts and finishes near the historic William A. The kickoff event to Grandma’s Marathon weekend since its start in 1994, is the William A Irvin 5K.
It’s a time that our city and community throws open its doors to welcome participants from all over the world and introduce them to our race and way of life in northern Minnesota. In what’s become the largest community event of each calendar year, Grandma’s Marathon weekend has now become the unofficial kickoff to summer in Duluth and the surrounding region.
